Cottage Grove is a city in Washington County, in the state of Minnesota, US. It is situated 8 miles south of Saint Paul. It lies on the north bank of the Mississippi River. The city and nearby suburbs constitute the southeast part of Minneapolis-Saint Paul, the country’s sixteenth largest metropolitan area with around 3.5 million of residents. As of 2010, the total residents living in the city is 34, 589.
Cottage Grove is a bedroom community of Saint Paul and to a smaller extent Minneapolis connected by US Routes 10 and 61. It was once a rural township popular for the wheat production and first creameries in the state and the area was served by river shipping, rail lines and grist mills. The main settlers came from New England, leaving their architectural influence which is preserved until today.
In the 1840s, the area was settled with the creation of two villages, Old Cottage Grove and Langdon. During the arrival of the early settlers, the land was thick with prairie grass and oaks. The savannah-like landscape was developed into farmland with most settlers founding dairy farms.
Previously containing the railway station village of Langdon, the overall ownership incorporated in 1963 into Cottage Grove. James Sullivan Norris who was a New Englander and early farmer named his homestead Cottage Grove which the town adopted.
The Strawberry Fest which happens every year in the city attracts thousands of residents together for the celebration. The event is usually held second week of June at Kingston Park. There are also plenty of historic places in the city such as the Schilling Archeological District, Historic Cedarhurst Mansion, Atkinson Cemetery, Grey Cloud Lime Kiln, Historic First Congregational Church, Cottage Grove Town Hall, Historic William W. Furber House, Historic Harry Roberts House, Hope Glen Farm and many others.
The city has one of the two enduring dive-in theaters operating in the Twin Cities area which is the Cottage View Drive-in situated near the Innovation Road. The public buildings of the city include the City Hall, four fire stations, a three sheet ice arena, an 18-hole championship golf course, a public works building. The county of Washington has two buildings in town namely the South Washington County Serve Center and the Library.
Cottage Grove is served by four high schools, four middle schools and sixteen elementary schools. It also has preschool programs for children age 3-5 years. East Ridge High, the fourth high school in the city opened in the fall of 2009 which served students in grades 9-11. In 2010, it opened to twelfth graders.
The mascot of Park High is currently the Wolfpack and once was the Indians. In 1995, Cottage Grove Junior High was built and in the summer of 2009, it was renamed Cottage Grove Middle School and its mascot is currently a cougar.
Cottage Grove is a vibrant community with a thriving retail and manufacturing economy and is one of the best places to stay and live in the state of Minnesota with its growing real estate business.
