Windom is located on the shared border of Minneapolis with Richfield. This neighbourhood boasts well-constructed two and three bedroom homes in which most of them pre-date the 1940s. The neighborhood offers a wide array of shopping stores giving residents some opportunities to shop with unlimited options in locally owned establishments along Penn and Lyndale Avenues and national industrial businesses and retailers located near the highways. Windom is bordered by Diamond Lake Road and West 54th Street on the North, State Highway 62 on the South, Lyndale Avenue South on the west and Interstate 35W on the east.
Since the expansion of the streetcar system further south, opportunities for residential development have become inevitable. The neighborhood of Windom was named after a senator of the United States from Minnesota, William Windom.
The styles and types of housing in the neighborhood come in full range. The range of choices for housing is predominated by single family homes and duplexes though practically 40 percent of housing in Windom are multifamily units. Duplexes and single family homes are being laid out in grid-like pattern with sidewalks and trees lining the streets. Most of the homes are one or one and a half stories and are eclectic architecturally in style.
It appeared most homes were constructed before the year 1940 as the city was further expanding south due to the streetcar system. The multifamily units were constructed near major transportation corridors which are mainly from the 1970s.
