Newport is a city in the county of Washington, Minnesota, US. As of 2010, the population of the city was 3,435. The total area of the city is 3.88 square miles of which 3.63 miles is land and 0.25 square miles is water.

There were 875 and 1,354 households living in the city. The density of population was 946.3 inhabitants per square mile. Newport has 1,466 housing units. It is primarily a residential community and its assets are is people residing in the city. It is a small river community with residential streets that are bordered by trees, winding their way along the edge and bluff lands of the river. The small town persona of the city remained within its people and though the physical community is within a fifteen minute commute to Minneapolis and Saint Paul.

With 3, 435 residents, the city continued encouraging development and growth in the community. The city has a small town charm and atmosphere and a progressive attitude towards change making it a more desirable place to live, create business and work. It is strategically situated in the southeastern corner of the Metro Area with a convenient access to Highways 494 and 61 and is only minutes from the heart of St. Paul.

It boasts more than 90 acres of park-land, amazing blufflands along the Mississippi River. Newport is committed to preserving park land and open space and sustaining life quality that the residents have come to enjoy.

The historic Library of the city was established in 1889 dwelling in the old Baptist Church. Newport is proud of its library and due to its long history and unique service to the community it strived to keep it a place that is enjoyable for its patrons. It is equipped with three laptops and three computers, a copy and fax machines, and printer available for the use of public. It also offers wireless access for personal computers, tablets and phones. The residents can also use the Library as a meeting room. It even sells books. It has many magazines, books and games that residents will surely enjoy. The city also provides the residents with oversight and management of the Library as of January 1, 2012.

The city is inviting everyone to consider it a new home for their development whether commercial, industrial or residential. From a regional point of view, Newport is enjoying a very convenient location in the growing east metro area and is served by several modes of transportation such as Highway 61, I494, the River and the Canadian Pacific Rail Line. The modern day improvements to the Wakota Bridge, I494 and Highway 61 have brought Newport to the forefront and produced various opportunities for development and redevelopment.

Newport is conveniently situated just fifteen minutes southeast from Minneapolis and Saint Paul along the Mississippi Rivers. It provides a great advantage for businesses since it is located at the intersection of Highway 61 and I494. There are a number of properties within the city that have great visibility from either or both of the roadways.
