Sunfish Lake is a city in the county of Dakota in the state of Minnesota, US. The city’s population at the 2010 census was 521. It was first incorporated in 1958 as a village and the goal of the city is to maintain a rural atmosphere with great lot size and as little disturbance as possible of the natural environment. Compared to other cities of the country, the cost of living of Sunfish Lake is 93.40 percent higher than US average.
The total area of the City of Sunfish Lake according to the US Census Bureau is 1.69 square miles of which 1.52 square miles is land and the rest is water. Sunfish Lake is bordered by Highways 3 to the east, 110 to the north, Peiper Road/60th Street West to the south and the Delaware Avenue to the West. The I494 runs through Sunfish Lake with an exit at Highway 3.
Majority of the city is heavily wooded on moraine topography with several wetlands and slopes and three small private lakes namely Horseshoe Lake, Hornbeam Lake and the eponymous Sunfish Lake. The minimum size of lot for new construction is 2.5 acres of constructible land keeping within the goal of the city which is to maintain a rural atmosphere. The city is considered one of the richest towns in America.
As of the 2010 census, there were 521 residents in the city, 158 families and 183 households. The government of the City of Sunfish Lake is quite simple and there are no employees of the city and no direct services. Consultants are providing essential professional services. Roads are being maintained by independent contractors and contractual agreements within other cities cover fire and police protection. All but a few properties have individual septic systems and water wells.
